Abstrak

Overweight results when there is an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. As metabolism slows down with advancing age, amount of food eaten should be adjust. Being overweight is associated with a higher risk of disease mainly cardiovascular diseasese and diabetes mellitus type 2.The prevalence of overweight is influenced by a complex interaction of genetic, environmental and behavioural factors. Overweight now is a problem in almost all cities in Indonesia, and for Padang Panjang West Sumatera the prevalance of overweight is 37%.; 53,1% out of that 37 % are female. The present study was designed to address the above issue. Sample were 25-50 years old female kota Padang Panjang. Data were collected through questioners and assessment of body mass index. This study revealed that social economic, genetic and carbohydrate consumption contribute to the development of overweight among those subyects and suggest among others to those who are incharge in public health nutrition should give detail information on the risk, causes and prevention of overweight.
